growing design

a quick re-post from inhabitat about tokujin yoshioka's crystal chandelier. i've blogged about his crystal chairs which are grown the same way, this chandelier just takes the idea a step further and adds the dimensionality of light.

from inhabitat: "...the designer equates his newest design to 'a star descended from the sky emitting many rays of light in the space.' yoshioka’s artificial star was once just a collection of crystals floating in a mineral bath. the crystals solidified into a dynamic sphere using a technique that slows down movement and provides a structure for natural gathering. while his pieces are being created, yoshioka plays music to help guide them around a desired mold."

here are some images:

it reminds me of a diatom shell, although less geometrically structured, or maybe just at another scale. in other news, i just sent my design + nature manual off to blurb for printing, cross your fingers that they don't chop my pages off in strange places...
